Search Console vs Google Analytics: which numbers to trust for SEO

The two tools disagree on purpose. A clear explanation of what each one measures and which to use for which decision.

Search Console says you got 1,200 clicks. Analytics says 940 organic sessions. Neither is broken. They measure different moments, and knowing which is which stops a lot of pointless debate.

What each one sees

  • Search Console watches the results page: impressions, clicks, queries and positions. It stops the moment someone clicks.
  • Analytics watches your site: sessions, pages, events and conversions. It starts the moment the page loads.

Why the numbers never match

  1. 1A click that bounces before the tracking script loads is a Search Console click and not an Analytics session.
  2. 2Ad blockers and consent refusals suppress Analytics but not Search Console.
  3. 3Analytics groups several clicks in a short window into one session.
  4. 4Search Console attributes to the URL that appeared in results; a redirect sends Analytics somewhere else.
  5. 5Search Console hides low-volume queries for privacy, so its query totals are always slightly short.

Which to use for which question

  • Which keywords do I rank for — Search Console, always. Analytics cannot see queries.
  • Is my title winning clicks — Search Console CTR.
  • Do these visitors convert — Analytics. Search Console has no idea what happens after the click.
  • Which page should I refresh — Search Console for the loss, Analytics to check whether that traffic ever mattered commercially.

Use them together, in that order

Search Console tells you where attention is available. Analytics tells you whether that attention is worth anything. A query with 5,000 impressions and no revenue behind it is a hobby, not a strategy — you need both tools to see that.

WiseSEO reads your Search Console data directly, so the ranking side of that picture arrives every week without you exporting anything.
