Content decay: how to spot pages quietly losing traffic and bring them back

Most sites lose more traffic to decaying pages than they gain from new ones. A repeatable process for finding and refreshing them.

Content decay is the slow, unannounced decline of pages that used to perform. Nobody notices, because total traffic stays flat while new pages quietly subsidise old ones. Then the new pages stop coming and the whole line falls.

Why pages decay

  • Competitors published something newer and more complete.
  • The information aged — prices, versions, dates, screenshots, laws.
  • Search intent shifted; people now want a comparison where they used to want a definition.
  • A SERP feature or AI overview now answers the question above your result.
  • You published a newer page that competes with the old one.

Find them in Search Console

  1. 1Performance report, Pages tab, last 3 months compared with the previous 3 months.
  2. 2Sort by click difference, ascending, so the biggest losses come first.
  3. 3Ignore seasonal pages and anything you deliberately deprecated.
  4. 4For each remaining page, check whether impressions also fell (a ranking loss) or held steady (a CTR loss).

That distinction decides the fix. Impressions down means the page slipped and needs substance. Impressions flat with clicks down means the snippet or the SERP changed and you need a better title.

The refresh checklist

  1. 1Re-search the target query and read the current top three. Note every section they have that you do not.
  2. 2Update every fact, number, screenshot and year on the page.
  3. 3Rewrite the opening so it answers the question in the first hundred words.
  4. 4Cut anything that was padding. Shorter and sharper usually wins now.
  5. 5Add internal links from your newer, stronger pages to the refreshed one.
  6. 6Update the visible last-modified date honestly, and resubmit the URL in Search Console.

Refresh beats rewrite

A page with history, links and rankings is an asset. Do not delete it and republish at a new URL unless the topic genuinely changed. Keep the URL, keep the accumulated trust, improve what is on it.

Make it routine

Once a month, look at the three biggest click losses and refresh one. That single habit protects more traffic than most content calendars create — and it is one of the technical flags WiseSEO raises for you automatically.
